FrieslandCampina provides year-1 update on the execution of its climate plan

FrieslandCampina is on its way to produce net climate-neutral dairy by 2050.

To realise this goal the company launched its climate plan in 2022, as part of its integral Nourishing a better planet sustainability programme. The climate plan contains clear targets and concrete actions, to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 2030. FrieslandCampina reviews its climate plan continuously and shares the progress that is being made on a yearly basis.

Berndt Kodden, chief sustainability officer: “To realise our purpose Nourishing by nature, FrieslandCampina is fully dedicated to make its value chain more sustainable. We are confident that we will reach our goals. In our year-1 climate plan progress report, we summarise the results and initiatives that have been launched since 2022 to make progress towards our 2030 milestones. Fitting our long cooperative tradition, we are working closely together with member dairy farmers, customers, suppliers, scientists, NGOs and government on making a positive impact for planet and society. We want to thank everyone involved for their dedication and hard work to meet our climate targets.”

Progress in 2022

In 2022, FrieslandCampina achieved a 6.1% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from production and milk transport (scope 1 and 2) compared to the previous year. This reduction was due to several initiatives, such as investments in new CO2-reducing processes, closure of powder dryers in the Netherlands and the sale of powder installations in Belgium. Limited availability of biofuels due to the energy crisis hampered further emission reductions.

For milk produced at member dairy farms (scope 3 member milk), greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 2.5% compared to 2021. We recognise the diversity in member dairy farms in our cooperative and are supporting our members with a variety of tools and options that match their craftmanship and entrepreneurship. Starting in 2023, member dairy farmers will receive higher compensation for sustainability results achieved in the area of climate. FrieslandCampina also organizes workshops for farmers and expands innovative measures, such as mono-manure fermentation and feed additives, to reduce emissions.

Reliable data are important in measuring progress on targets. In the past year, important steps have been taken to improve data and data quality. FrieslandCampina is preparing itself to obtain limited assurance in the first half of 2023 on its emission reductions for all scope 3 categories for which targets have been set and which have been evaluated by SBTi.
