The goodness of milk

From milk to dairy product

A nice cold glass of milk is deliciously refreshing – at breakfast, at lunch or just to quench your thirst. Other dairy products have also gained iconic status at European dining tables. All over the world, countless products are made from milk.

Our dairy worldwide, for everyone

Every day, millions of people around the world choose dairy. Dietary habits vary by region and culture, and with our dairy products, we respond to the local tastes, habits, and needs of our customers and consumers. We process our milk into a wide range of dairy products. In this way, milk becomes much more than just milk.

Dairy products

Some of the best-known products based on milk are buttermilk, cheese, yoghurt and butter. These items form a familiar part of our diet, and result from our goal of producing good nutrition for the world.

  • Cheese

Cheese can ripen for just four weeks or for over a year. The longer the cheese ripens, the stronger the taste. The length of the ripening process determines the flavour and other characteristics of the cheese.
  • Condensed milk

Our condensed milk is used in coffee and tea, for making caramel and in desserts and cakes.
  • Butter

The fat in the milk is separated as much as possible from the watery liquid in a centrifuge. The cream left as a residue is pasteurised and then churned (stirred very strongly).
  • Buttermilk

Buttermilk is made by acidifying skimmed milk. In this process, the milk becomes a little thicker and gains a fresh-sour taste.
  • Mozzarella

Mozzarella is actually an extremely fresh kind of cheese. It is not placed in a brine bath, like other cheeses, and so it does not ripen any further.
  • Yoghurt

Yoghurt is a fermented milk product. Milk ferments due to the presence of bacteria and a high temperature. This process results in yoghurt.
  • Quark

Quark is milk that has been acidified by lactic acid bacteria. This thickens its consistency. Sometimes, extra milk powder is added as well. This is why quark contains more protein than products such as milk or yoghurt.
  • Drug carriers

Lactose, or milk sugar, is used as a drug carrier in the form of a dry powder. A medicine contains only a small proportion of the active agent. This active drug is stored in a tablet, capsule or inhaler with pharmaceutical lactose. We make this from milk, too.
  • Ingredients

Dairy-based ingredients can be used to make all kinds of products. You will find milk being used in countless ways: in ready-to-drink beverages, savoury soups and sauces, pastries and cakes, (frozen) desserts, milk powder for coffee and much more. Food manufacturers are keen to make use of these ingredients.

Infant nutrition

If, for whatever reason, breastfeeding is not possible, then infant nutrition is an alternative. Cow’s milk is used to make infant nutrition. FrieslandCampina makes complete infant nutrition products, as well as ingredients for infant nutrition.

Special consumer groups

Good nutrition for the world means good nutrition for everyone. That includes special consumer groups. Milk is excellently suited for making nutrition for vulnerable people or people with special needs. Just think of elderly people, young children, expectant mothers, hospital patients or athletes. Quality of nutrition and, above all, good-quality protein are especially important for them.

Milk applications require innovation

We use milk as the basis for countless products. From iconic foods such as cheese and yoghurt to medicines or ingredients for soups and sauces. Innovation inspires us and to release the nourishing power of milk.
