Innovation Centre Wageningen

Milk is the core of everything we do. Including creating better nutrition for the world, now and in the future. Every day we are devoted to unlocking the nutritional power of dairy products, supplying its nutrients more widely and effectively available, and working more sustainably. Our Innovation and Development Centres play a key role in doing so.

R&D

At our Innovation Centre on the Wageningen University Campus, one of the world’s leading agri-food ecosystems, scientists and technologists collaborate closely with universities, start-ups, and other partners to unlock the secrets of milk. We dive deep into the structure, function, and health benefits of milk’s unique components. We use this knowledge to create nourishing solutions for consumers and professional customers alike—from infant and medical nutrition to sports recovery and food ingredients.

Wageningen, the Netherlands is often referred to as “Food Valley”. The town is an internationally oriented hub that hosts knowledge institutes and companies active in the R&D field of nutrition. That is why in 2010 we decided to concentrate our Research & Development in Wageningen.

Meet our Innovation Centre Wageningen

In Wageningen various disciplines, such as research & development, marketing, sales, procurement, and supply chain, work together intensively in an inspiring environment. Cooperation with innovation partners like Wageningen University & Research centre, other knowledge institutes, our member dairy farmers, customers and suppliers also happens at the Innovation Centre in order to accelerate and strengthen innovation process.

Our Innovation Centre in Wageningen has four parts. A large pilot plant with cooling and storage rooms and three building units, accommodating the highly hygienic laboratories and offices, connected by broad footbridges and atriums. The building also contains a so-called experience centre, an innovation kitchen and a bakery, in which consumers, customers, and employees of FrieslandCampina from all over the world can experience our tasty products.

Sustainability as a top priority

Our Innovation Centre has a BREEAM certification. BREEAM is the leading method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings. Different aspects, such as, water, waste and use of land and materials are determined. Some highlights of the sustainable design include:

  • The Innovation Centre runs on green energy.
  • The high insulation level of the building shell and innovative climate systems further reduce energy consumption.
  • For lighting we use high-efficiency fluorescent lights combined with the latest generation LED lighting.
  • The rise of electric means of transport is anticipated by the provision of charging points for cars, scooters and/or bicycles.
