Sustainable from grass to glass
Dairy goes on a long journey before it is actually consumed. This journey starts with the cows being milked. Next, the milk travels from the farm to our production facilities. Finally, it arrives in a packaged form at a distribution centre. That production and transport process must be in balance with the environment. Our goal is to make this process entirely circular and CO2 neutral.
Good nutrition, sustainably produced
We control the chain, from the farm all the way up to the moment our products leave our production facilities. From grass to glass. This way, we guarantee healthy nutrition, high quality and sustainable production for consumers. Together with our member dairy farmers, we seek out, explore and seize opportunities to minimise our ecological footprint as we continue to feed the growing world population. We are already making good progress. Over the last 30 years, our milk production increased by 18% while our greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 20%.
These are the measures we are taking
We are making our entire chain more sustainable and even taking action outside of it, for example in the area of purchasing.
Packaging-related action
We are working on innovative packaging to achieve circularity.Purchasing-related action
We also purchase other raw materials for our dairy products. We do this in a responsible way.Production-related action
We are reducing water consumption and recycling all residual streams at our production facilities.
Measuring and monitoring
Striving for sustainable production is good. Seeing results is even better. We are not fond of estimates and rough calculations. We want to know the exact figures and base our choices on facts. Objective measuring instruments give us clarity about what exactly our impact on the environment is.
100% use of ‘Green Electricity’
2020: 95.8 (percentage of total electricity consumed at production facilities)691 kton greenhouse gas emission production and transport
2020: 743 (in kton CO2-equivalent)50% green electricity consumption from own chain
2020: 44 (percentage; produced by member dairy farmers among others)
