A complex challenge
At FrieslandCampina we want to help combat undernutrition by broadening availability and affordability of healthy and/or fortified foods, especially for consumers who have reduced access to healthy and affordable foods, like lower income groups. Our Broadening access to nutrition programme, is aimed to actively reach these people especially in our lower income markets, with affordable products that have an optimal nutritional value.
How we work towards this
The goal of our Broadening Access to Nutrition programme is to actively reach people with affordable and highly nutritious products, especially in our developing country markets.
Growing our portfolio of affordable nutrition products in our lower income markets with our affordable nutrition business model
Our lower income markets are Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. The affordable nutrition business model focusses on broadening access to nutrition through local targets and tailored pack size, price, distribution channels and promotional activities of our affordable nutrition products to make sure the lower income groups are reached. On FrieslandCampina level the target and impact are measured by the volume share of affordable nutrition products sold in our lower income markets.
Optimising the nutritional value of affordable nutrition products
We optimise the nutritional value of affordable nutrition products to help combat undernutrition by applying the Affordable Nutritional Standards. These Standards are focused on the quantity and quality of proteins in products and to vitamins and minerals which are required to combat undernutrition. The target and impact are measured by the sold volume share of affordable nutrition products that complies to the Affordable Nutritional Standards.
Food aid
FrieslandCampina provides products to Food Banks and supports School Milk and School Feeding programmes in almost all countries where we have an operating company. We aim to be active in all those countries.
Product composition
We have clear targets and we actively monitor and report our progress. It is our objective to increase the percentage of affordable nutrition products that complies with the FrieslandCampina Affordable Nutritional Standards in our lower income markets (at least 50% of sold volume in 2025).
Product balance
It is our objective to increase the share of affordable nutrition products in our lower income markets (at least 15% of sold volume in 2025).
Non-commercial activities
In addition to the commercial approach, food aid also remains necessary. FrieslandCampina cooperates with the Red Cross, provides products to Food Banks and supports School Milk and School Feeding programs.
In almost all countries where we have an operating company, FrieslandCampina contributes to non-commercial activities. In 2025 we aim to be active in all those countries.
To help combat undernutrition it is also important that sufficient and good quality milk is available. In view of increasing the availability of milk in certain countries, FrieslandCampina initiated the Dairy Development Programme.
