Our heritage

Our heritage

In late December 2008 FrieslandCampina is founded on two great Dutch dairy companies: Friesland Foods and Campina, which developed along similar lines in the 19th and 20th centuries.

It all began in the 1871 when farmers join forces in local cooperative dairy factories all over the Netherlands. They did this to safeguard sales of their milk because without modern refrigeration they have to work together to deliver the milk quickly to their customers. Another reason to join forces was to gain more power in the market.

The 19,006 member dairy farmers (13,542 member dairy farms) jointly form the Cooperative. The Cooperative’s geographical area of operations is divided into 21 districts. Each district has 10 chosen representatives. Together the 210 members of the District Boards form the Cooperative’s Member Council. The Board has nine members. Each member can apply for a seat on the Board. A Selection Committee selects the candidates and issues a proposal to the Member Council, which ultimately selects each new Board Member.

The Board, together with four Supervisory Board members from outside the Cooperative, jointly form the Supervisory Board of the company. The Chairmen’s Meeting is comprised of the 21 district chairmen, who act as a sounding board for the Board.
