On Friday morning 16 August, at 10 am Hans Meeuwis, President FrieslandCampina Dairy Essentials, rang the bell at the Alkmaar cheese market (NL). Ringing the bell is the sign that indicates the start of the cheese market. Hans rang the bell in front of host and alderman Marcel van Zon and a number of colleagues from FrieslandCampina.
“It was nice to ring the bell and officially open the cheese market in Alkmaar. A lot passion for cheese and craft here in beautiful Alkmaar, a city connected to our characterful North Holland Gouda with the Red Seal from Lutjewinkel (NL). About 200,000 visitors experience and taste the rich history and our beautiful products!”, according to Hans.
The award-winning North Holland Gouda cheese is a cheese that is made from milk of cows grazing in the spacious polder land of North-Holland. It was awarded a Protected Designation of Origin by the European Union. That Red Seal is owned by FrieslandCampina.
The Alkmaar cheese market has been a tradition since 1593. This year, the cheese market is held every Friday morning from 10 am to 1 pm from 29 March to 27 September. There are also evening cheese markets on Tuesdays from 7pm to 9 pm in July and August.
