The production location in Bedum (NL) has opened a new biogas installation and a renovated cheese processing department. With these two innovations FrieslandCampina Bedum makes a contribution to making the production chain more sustainable. Frans Keurentjes, Chairman of the Cooperative Board of FrieslandCampina U.A., performed the opening of the biogas installation and the cheese processing department.
Frans Keurentjes: “The milk of my dairy farm is also processed at the production location in Bedum. This made it feel very special to me to open these two initiatives in Bedum, together with the employees. FrieslandCampina aims at making the ‘from grass to glass’ process more sustainable. Therefore it is nice to see the steps Bedum is taking in the area of sustainability with the cheese processing department and the biogas installation.”
Reduction of CO2 emissions and savings in gas consumption thanks to biogas installation
Bedum has its own water treatment plant. This fully purifies all the water coming from the production location. Marco Tekstra, SHE Manager at FrieslandCampina Bedum: “Biogas is generated from the sludge of the water treatment plant. This new installation washes out the sulphur present in the biogas, the water is extracted from the sludge and this leaves clean biogas. We use this biogas for the production processes in the locations. The remainder of the sludge is transported to a compost processing company, which can then use this to make manure. With respect to sustainability this is a major step forward.
Sustainable investments in cheese processing department 1
Cheese processing department 1 was renovated in the past six weeks. The production continued safely in this period. The production area was modernised with a new ceiling and LED lighting. “This processing area is over 38 years old. About time for a refurbishment,” according to Plant Manager Sikko van der Tuin. “The new LED lighting obviously is a choice for sustainability. LED lighting uses less energy and it has a long service life.” The employees of the cheese processing department were all present to celebrate the opening.
