The first milk cartons with the ‘On the way to PlanetProof’ label are now in the stores. This allows consumers to choose more sustainable milk that meets high demands in terms of animal welfare, nature and climate. This label from Stichting Milieukeur sets the standard for a broader sustainability approach for agriculture and horticulture. FrieslandCampina is the first dairy company that meets the requirements. For a few cents more, consumers can now choose for a more sustainable dairy product. This directly benefits the dairy farmers involved.
At the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), PlanetProof-certified dairy farmers wished all employees a PlanetProof 2019 this morning and distributed the On the way to PlanetProof-Campina dairy.

Transformation dairy industry achievable
Marjolijn Sonnema, Director General Agro of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality: “Our ministry is working hard to make the agricultural sector more sustainable. That is why Minister Carola Schouten recently presented her Recycling Vision. We find it very special that so many dairy farmers respond so quickly on ‘PlanetProof’, and in this way implement the Recycling Vision. They work very hard and earn a higher remuneration for this.”
Gijs Dröge, Director of Stichting Milieukeur: “It is a great achievement from FrieslandCampina’s dairy farmers that they, together with the company, could meet all the requirements of the quality mark and from today offer in the Netherlands the opportunity to have a greater environmental impact. ‘On the way to PlanetProof’ involves several sustainability themes at the same time. That makes it so challenging, because improvements on one component sometimes lead to lower scores on other components. Good scoring on all themes requires a lot of craftsmanship. ”
Hein Schumacher, CEO Royal FrieslandCampina N.V.: “As FrieslandCampina we want to be a frontrunner in sustainable dairy products. Together with our member dairy farmers, we have therefore been working for years on a more sustainable dairy farm. Thanks to the ‘On the way to Planet Proof’ label, we show how we take the next step and continue to move forward. By buying dairy products with the ‘On the way to Planet Proof’ label, consumers can directly reward dairy farmers who are committed to animal welfare and improving nature and the environment. It is also an encouragement for other dairy farmers to make their farm more sustainable. That is not only good for the sector, but good for all of us.”
What is On the way to PlanetProof?
In a ‘PlanetProof’ dairy farm, farmers and dairy companies work together to improve nature, climate and animal welfare. For example, for climate, the use of sustainable energy and less CO2 emissions, less pesticides for nature and more space for flowers and insects, and for the cow, for example, massage brushes, own sunbeds and outdoor grazing. The high standards that dairy farmers have to meet are regularly reconsidered and, where necessary, made more stringent.
