The Vietnamese Minister Duc Phat for Rural Development paid a visit to FrieslandCampina in the Netherlands on 2 October 2011. The purpose of the Minister’s visit was to be informed about the most recent developments in dairy farming in the Netherlands, particularly in the areas of quality and quality assurance for farm milk and dairy products. The Netherlands and FrieslandCampina are leading in the field of quality control for dairy products.
Minister Phat was welcomed by Kees Wantenaar, chairman of the Board of the FrieslandCampina dairy co-operative and Sybren Attema, FrieslandCampina’s regional manager of dairy development at the Dairy Campus pilot farm of Wageningen UR in Goutum (Friesland).
At the farm, the Minister and the members of his delegation were provided with information about the Foqus quality system used by FrieslandCampina. The COKZ (Central Organisation for Quality Issues in Dairy) explained how it, being an independent inspection institute, supervises the quality systems of all Dutch dairy companies.
Wageningen UR showed the most recent developments with respect to dairy farming at the Dairy Campus. The university also indicated how it can play a role concerning practical training and education in the development of the dairy farming sector in Vietnam.
Minister Phat was impressed by the system of dairy farming in the Netherlands. The introduction of quality standards for farm milk and the need for an independent semi-public inspection organisation is important in this respect. FrieslandCampina told the Minister that it would be willing to act as a partner in developing the dairy farming sector in Vietnam. Wageningen UR can provide Vietnam with practical training support.
