The trade prize for the best cheese inspector of the Netherlands was won this year by Jo Penders, project manager Technological Support of FrieslandCampina in Amersfoort (The Netherlands). With 226 points, Penders was the best of five hundred cheese experts who participated at the National Cheese Inspection Contest (NNKC).
In addition to the Golden Cheese drill awarded to Jo Penders, there was also a gold medal in the Trade category for Chris Huisman (FrieslandCampina Hardinxveld-Giessendam), a bronze medal in the category Industry for Nicole Janssen (FrieslandCampina Leerdam). The festive award giving ceremony took place on Thursday, 14 October in the Gooiland Theatre in Hilversum.
The Dutch Cheese Inspection Contest (NNKC) was organised this year for the 51st time and is an annual high point within the cheese sector. Participants ‘blind’ tested ten cheese samples of the most everyday Dutch cheeses. They looked, smelled, felt and tasted to determine which type, quality and age the cheeses were. In addition, any taste incongruities were noted. Participants who proved the best tasters and could distinguish the cheeses were rewarded with prizes. The winner of the NNKC award is allowed to call himself the best cheese connoisseur of the Netherlands for a year long.
