FrieslandCampina Kievit, an operating company of the Ingredients business group, has been recognised for a breakthrough in encapsulation technology. FrieslandCampina Kievit has developed the technology and an ingredient, allowing polyunsaturated fatty acids that do not contain any proteins or other dairy components to be added to baby nutrition. This ingredient is called Vana-Sana DHA 7 IF protein-free and is particularly important for babies with a cow milk allergy, who cannot tolerate any dairy in their diet. The award was presented by Frost & Sullivan, an international consultancy, and is specifically intended for companies involved in ground-breaking innovation.
Frost & Sullivan: “FrieslandCampina Kievit is a leader in encapsulation technology. This innovation has created a milestone. It’s a revolutionary product.”
FrieslandCampina Kievit is an unmitigated global specialist in encapsulation technology: ‘packaging’ microparticles in a protective coating, such as nutritional oil encapsulated in starch. This technology allows ingredients to be used in a variety of specific applications in baby and infant nutrition and special nutrition, for example, without having a negative impact on the taste and smell of the end product.
Product has longer shelf life and greater stability
Until now, a major problem for baby formula manufacturers has been that the formula, which contains specific fatty acids, became unstable when it was exposed to air (oxidation). With the encapsulation technology used in Vana-Sana DHA 7 IF protein-free, for example, fatty acids can be encapsulated so that the product remains stable for longer. The polyunsaturated fatty acids that can be incorporated into baby formula using this technology are essential for a healthy diet and growth.
FrieslandCampina Kievit offers its customers a range of ingredients containing encapsulated oils, for example with a high Omega-3 fatty acid content, all under the Vana-Sana brand. The big advantage is that the Kievit ingredients are added in powder form, providing convenience, stability and flexibility for food producers.
