2016 – 2025: international decade against undernourishment

17 June 2016

Hundreds of millions of people all over the world are suffering from chronic undernourishment and micronutrient deficiencies. Expelling famine and preventing undernourishment is one of the worldwide objectives of the United Nations. In connection with this the UN have proclaimed the period 2016-2025 the ‘Decade of Action on Nutrition‘.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation FAO, about 800 million people are chronically undernourished and over two billion people suffer from micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) deficiencies at this very moment. Besides, 160 million children under five years of age are too short for their age and 50 million children are underweight. This is in sharp contrast to 1.9 billion people who are overweight, 600 million of which are obese.

Implementation of Action on Nutrition

The FAO and the World Health Organisation (WHO) coordinate the implementation of the Decade of Action on Nutrition together with the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and UNICEF. They make an appeal to the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) or to the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). Also an appeal is made to the national governments, international and regional organisations, citizens, companies and science.

Better nutrition for the world

The global population is expected to grow from 7.4 billion people in 2015 to 8.5 billion people in 2030 and more than 9 billion people in 2050. This, together with the increase in wealth, will result in an increased demand for food. FrieslandCampina can, with its dairy products, contribute towards feeding the world’s population. FrieslandCampina will focus on:

  • improving its products’ recipes
  • ensuring dairy products remain affordable and thus relevant for all income groups.

A good living for our farmers

FrieslandCampina’s goal is to add as much value as possible to the milk to be able to make the maximum contribution towards the incomes and continuity of many generations of dairy farmers. FrieslandCampina strives to pay out one of the highest milk prices in Northwest Europe. By doing so FrieslandCampina remains an attractive company for the member dairy farmers. In a number of countries in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe FrieslandCampina offers local dairy farmers assistance with improving their farm management and milk quality.

Now and for generations to come

FrieslandCampina focuses on future generations. This is why FrieslandCampina invests in sustainable long-term growth and the financial health of the Company and the Cooperative. The aim is to achieve climate-neutral growth and reduce the use of scarce natural resources such as water and fossil fuels.

Spearhead within Development Cooperation

For the Ministry for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation worldwide food security is one of the spearheads in the national policy. The Netherlands mainly makes a contribution to raising the food security level by increasing the food production, making food more easily accessible, removing trade barriers, improving the business climate and financing studies.
