How we work to get the best fresh ideas

Crucial to our success in innovation is alignment with the FrieslandCampina route2020 strategy, and with the relevant professionals, facilities and budgets. But just as important is the way we work: how we collaborate internally and externally. That means applying high standards in project portfolio management, developing our expertise internally in communities of practice and actively exchanging views and ideas in our external network with other companies, universities and research institutes. After all, innovation starts with fresh ideas!

Project portfolio management
In our view, innovation has everything to do with managing creativity. Proceeding from our route2020 strategy and the benefit areas we focus on, we select research themes and ideas for product development. We use a dedicated stage gate model with clear objectives and criteria, which we use to decide whether we should allocate people and other resources to subsequent steps in a project. This dedicated approach helps our professionals to do the right things, thereby building on our aspiration to help people move forward in life with dairy nutrition and be the most attractive dairy company for our member farmers.

Communities of practice
Focus combined with knowledge-sharing is key to our global R&D organisation. We have established communities of practice across department groups of people with a passion for a shared field of expertise. Examples include fermentation, packaging, sensory, nutrition, and bakery applications.

Our network
Sharing and developing ideas is not limited to FrieslandCampina. Only a fraction of the technological potential works for FrieslandCampina. We estimate that globally, some 1,500,000 researchers are active in areas that are relevant to us. We believe that cross-sectoral cooperation is the driver for breakthrough innovations.
We have professional contacts and collaborations all over the world with other companies (e.g. suppliers and customers) with dairy organisations (Global Dairy Platform (GDP), International Dairy Federation (IDF) etc.), and with knowledge providers (universities, partnerships, institutes).
