Milk equivalent
The total volume of milk produced by dairy farmers worldwide can be easily measured in kilograms. A litre of milk weighs about 1.03 kilograms.
But if milk is subsequently processed into e.g. yoghurt, desserts, powder, cheese or butter, it is important to be able to convert these products back to the quantity of milk used for their production. This is done by means of milk equivalents. Making one kilo of Gouda cheese, for example, requires about 10 kilos of milk. So one kilo of Gouda cheese represents 10 milk equivalents.
