Hygienic milking method

When the cow feels comfortable, is well looked-after and is given healthy feed, it can produce milk. The cow collects the milk in its udder. The dairy farmer milks the cow so that the product becomes available for human consumption.
Hygiene is key during this process. It ensures that the dairy farmer prevents harmful ambient bacteria from contaminating the milk. Hygiene begins with the provision of clean, dry lying areas and clean walking paths in the stable. The area where the cow is milked must also be clean.
The teats and the udder are also always cleaned before the cow is milked. After each milking session the dairy farmer cleans the milking installation with hot water and detergent. That way, no milk residues – which are a potential breeding ground for bacteria – are left in the installation.
